We all know and love the discreet apple flavor of chamomile tea, but there is so much more to know about this delicate asteraceae flower. Firstly Chamomile has a reputation for helping you sleep. While this is true, there is more to the plant then that. It is referred to as the "mother of the gut" for a reason.
This herb is a gentle bitters, antispasmodic and carminative. Meaning it stimulates digestion with the bitter content and helps soothe the smooth muscle of the stomach. Great also for inflammation of the GI tract, bloating, ulcers, gas & IBS.
It works as a nervine relaxant to calm the nervous system and help relaxation. This would benefit anxiety and all stress-related disorders, as well as insomnia and trouble sleeping.
So when there is an association between anxiety or sleep, and problems of the gut, think Chamomile.
The digestive system is linked with the nervous system very closely, when one is not functioning the other is soon to follow.
Remember, with any food or herb, quality matters. When you buy Chamomile tea you want it to be loose flowers not in tea bags. You should be able to see the flowers of the plant and a bright color should still be present.
Because this herb has volatile oils (part of what helps it as a stomach aid) you should keep your tea cup covered and allow it to steep for 10 minutes before drinking.
So nice with a slice of lemon and a bit of honey.
